Key Takeaways: Insta360 X4 wins on workflow speed; Kandao QooCam 3 Ultra wins on raw quality. For VR180, a dual Insta360 ONE RS rig is the sweet spot for Apple Vision Pro.
Finding the Best Image Quality and Flexibility
Producing content for Apple Vision Pro demands more from your camera than a standard 4K shoot. Viewers inside the headset are just centimetres from the virtual canvas — every compression artefact, every stitching seam, every motion blur is magnified. We spent several weeks testing the most popular compact cameras across both 360° equirectangular and VR180 formats to find out which ones hold up.
The cameras we tested:
- Insta360 X4 — 8K 360°, built-in stitching, excellent app ecosystem
- Kandao QooCam 3 Ultra — 8K 360° with larger sensor
- Insta360 ONE RS 1-Inch 360° Edition — 6K with the larger 1-inch sensor
- GoPro Max — 6.2K, rugged, known workflow
- Insta360 ONE RS (dual VR180 rig) — purpose-built for VR180 output
The Test: Workflow and Processing
We shot identical scenes with each camera — an interior architectural space (high dynamic range), an outdoor daylight scene, and a low-light evening exterior. Each clip was processed through the manufacturer’s recommended pipeline and then encoded to MV-HEVC for Apple Vision Pro playback inside Spatial Player Pro.
We evaluated:
- Stitching quality — visible seams, ghosting at stitch lines
- Dynamic range — shadow and highlight detail
- Sharpness — detail retention at 100% crop in the headset
- Workflow speed — time from card to final MV-HEVC file
- Kiosk stability — does the file play cleanly in Spatial Player Pro kiosk mode with no stutter?
The Results
Insta360 One RS 1-Inch: The Aging Mini-Pro
The Insta360 ONE RS 1-Inch sits in an interesting position. Excellent latitude, good stitching, and a sensor that handles mixed lighting gracefully. The 1-inch sensor handles interior dynamic range noticeably better than the X4. Recommended for productions where you have half a day in post.
Its age is starting to show at the high end — the 6K ceiling is visible at close inspection in the headset — but for mid-range budgets it remains a strong choice.
Insta360 X4: Reliable but Limited
Insta360 X4 was the clear winner for workflow speed. The automatic stitching is excellent in daylight conditions and the Insta360 Studio app exports MV-HEVC directly. For fast-turnaround presentations — a trade show the next morning — this is the right tool.
The limitation is dynamic range. Interior scenes with windows challenge the sensor, and the stitching line in complex scenes is more visible than on the QooCam. For controlled environments, it’s unbeatable on speed.
Qoocam Ultra 3: A Professional’s Compact Dream
Kandao QooCam 3 Ultra produced the sharpest equirectangular frames in our test. The larger sensor handles interior dynamic range noticeably better than any competitor. The stitch quality in challenging light is exceptional.
The trade-off: stitching is more manual, and the export pipeline to MV-HEVC requires an extra step through DaVinci Resolve. If you have time in post, this is the camera.
Dual GoPro VR180 Rig: Affordable and Sharp
GoPro Max delivered solid but not exceptional results as a 360° camera. However, paired in a dual VR180 rig configuration, it punches above its weight. The 6.2K ceiling shows at close inspection in the headset, but the stereoscopic depth output is clean.
For productions with tight budgets but high spatial depth requirements, the dual-GoPro VR180 approach is surprisingly competitive.
What’s Next? Exploring a Dual Qoocam VR180 Rig
For VR180 — which renders natively as spatial video on Apple Vision Pro — a dual Insta360 ONE RS rig fitted with wide-angle lenses performed best in our secondary tests. The native stereoscopic depth and reduced stitching complexity make this our current recommendation for high-end client presentations.
A dedicated QooCam dual-lens VR180 rig test is in progress. We’ll publish results next quarter.
Conclusion: Compact Cameras for Every Workflow
There is no single best camera — the right choice depends on your turnaround time, budget, and the complexity of your scene.
| Camera | Best for | Rating |
|---|---|---|
| Insta360 X4 | Fast turnaround, events | ★★★★☆ |
| Kandao QooCam 3 Ultra | Maximum quality, arch/real estate | ★★★★★ |
| Insta360 ONE RS 1-inch | Balanced quality + workflow | ★★★★☆ |
| GoPro Max | Rugged outdoor shoots | ★★★☆☆ |
| Dual ONE RS (VR180) | Spatial depth, client wow-factor | ★★★★★ |
All cameras produced files that play stably in Spatial Player Pro kiosk mode on Apple Vision Pro. The encoding step to MV-HEVC is the most critical — we recommend following the encoding guide in our [documentation] (/preparing-and-uploading-content/).
